Interview with Tomás Nevin Photography & Video

How long have you been a wedding photographer and what makes you different from everyone else?

I have been taking Photographs for 20 years. My inspiration was the picture here when John.F.Kennedy drove past our clothes shop in Galway and my father had a photographer shoot the moment JFK came into the frame. That taught me everything. I went on to learn about framing, composition, timing, events and capturing the perfect frame as it happens. What makes me different to other professionals in this area is a wealth of creative experience, observation and passion in imagery.

What type of couples do you work best with?

		I like couples who enjoy photography and are passionate about important events in their lives. Brides and Grooms appreciate my ability to capture their emotional and family events creatively and simply, without any fuss or obtrusion. I work with couples who appreciate my ability to record their life event, without taking over or being intrusive. My clients understand that a wedding is a once in a lifetime event and they want it recorded accurately. It is very important to book a Photographer & Videographer who specialises in weddings and with my extensive experience in the wedding industry couples can trust that I will provide a professional and quality service based on their unique requirements.

There is a lot of talk about style of photography, where do you fit in?

I capture a blend of styles. Candid and reportage mixed with simple and relaxed portraiture is necessary to capture the essence of a couple and the flow of a wedding day. I include some formal portrait shots, as family groups are important to couples and parents when choosing album selections after the wedding day. During each couple's pre-wedding consultation we discuss balancing the momentum of the day and how each stage of day will progress. This ensures we get to capture all the key shots and also any special photos the couple may request. Some of the words people have used to describe my wedding photography are: emotional, bright, colourful, powerful, gorgeous and beautiful. I will always tailor styles to suit your preferences. Viewing a range of my sample albums will give you a good indication of the various photography styles.

You also do Video. Are you a Photographer, Videographer or jack-of-all-trades?

		Yes, I am a Photographer. I trained as a Fine Artist and I have a range of other skills in photography, video/film and design. I also have a degree and a Master of Fine Arts. I have been teaching Photography and Video since the 80's. I have worked in the Photography & Video industry in Ireland, UK and Canada. When couples book both Photography with Video packages, my wife Louise shoots video - she is a fully trained videographer.   The video is edited in collaboration. As a former fashion designer Louise works very well with our brides especially in positioning fabrics and bridal party details. Louise is also a Personal & Business Coach and has helped many brides and grooms, plan their wedding and achieve everything that needs to be done for a stress-free special day.

Will you work with the other vendors I've already found or people I really want to work with?

		I am well respected in the wedding industry and within the wedding supplier community. I am a great communicator and get along with everyone. I get on with their other wedding suppliers such as limousine drivers, florists, DJs, hotel staff and wedding planners.   Wedding couples always appreciate the fact that I will never raise my voice loudly during their wedding day. When organising group shots I always ask a family member to help out, this speeds up the process and keeps everyone comfortable and happy.  I have contriuted and written many articles for wedding publications. My photographs have appeared in publications such as "Weddings Online B Magazine", "VIP Magazine" and "Galway Now".

This all sounds perfect for my wedding. Are we going to be able to afford all this?

Yes. I believe in giving excellent value to my clients and am competitive amongst other photographers especially when photography is combined with a video package. My fee includes extensive post production and I provide a High Resolution CD disc to my clients as part of their purchase at no additional cost (a value of €300 upwards). I have a selection of albums at various price ranges and a digital only package for those who may wish to upgrade at a later date. I am always happy to tailor a package to suit a couples needs, just give me a call to discuss your requirements and we can take it from there. Your Photography & Video is a personal investment. It's also one of the few physical items a couple has after their wedding apart from each other of course! It is an important investment for you and your family and I believe I can make it affordable for you.

Do you have a payment plan?

		Yes. A deposit of €300 is required to secure your date and full payment is on or before the wedding day. Your desposit secures your wedding date. If you are not sure on the package to choose that is fine, once you make a booking with desposit you can decide on which package you would like to choose before your wedding day.  The balance can be paid either in full or by installments over the months prior to your wedding date. This payment plan gives you flexibility and space to work out all your weddings costs over the months before your wedding day. I also have Wedding Gift vouchers available, which can be used by guests prior to your wedding to help you with your preferred Photography & Video package.

I don't see you on wedding websites like weddingsonline or at the large wedding fairs

I have been in the Wedding Photography & Video business over 20 years and have participated in many large wedding fairs and marketing websites. In today's market, priorities have changed for wedding couples and pricing has become an understandable concern for most couples. For this reason, I keep my competitive costs as low as possible. Instead of paying €4k-€5k on lavish marketing costs and adding these costs back onto my clients budget, I prefer to keep my pricing transparent and competitive without compromising on standards or reducing the clients overall value for their budget. I believe people trust people, and that is why the majority of my clients are referals from other satisfied customers over the years.
